The Girl Next Door
Home Sweet Holmes
Vogue - UK
by Lauren Milligan
"SCONES! How could I forget about scones?!" Katie Holmes exclaimed as a cake platter arrived before her. "Get your paws off my clotted cream," she joked. "They're never the same at home, drier than your knees in winter. I love coming to the UK."
Completely human (she had two scones as we chatted, with cream and jam), but still inhumanly beautiful, Holmes has translated her accessible attractiveness into a collection with the same values: beautiful, but not garish; stylish, but not trendy; luxurious, but not ostentatious. Holmes & Yang - established with her friends, stylist Jeanne Yang and businesswoman Heather McQuarrie, in 2009 - was created to fill a gap for luxury basics in all three women's wardrobes.
While the concept behind the brand may not be revolutionary - classic-with-a-twist pieces that can be worn from day to night, work with everything in your wardrobe, and suit women of all shapes and sizes - the quality of the craftsmanship may surprise you. Real attention to detail has been paid to each garment: from weighted seams in coats; to internal "powermesh" in dresses creating a flawless silhouette; to an extra seam along the back of trouser legs which stops short to expose the shoe - inspired, Holmes explains, by couture-wearing icons of the silver screen.
"We love Ingrid Bergman, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly," Holmes said. "So we went back and said, 'What was it about those pieces that made them memorable?' 'Was it the highlighted slim waist, or the shape of the skirt?' And when you go back you realise you were looking at the woman, not the clothes."
"When you look at a woman who has style, you usually can't figure out what it is," Yang added. "It's not usually because, 'Oh, she wears this designer'."
And as for modern celebrities who epitomise the Holmes & Yang aesthetic?
"We love Adele," Holmes said. "Alicia Keys... There are women, from rock stars to heads of state, who we'd love to dress - but I love hearing moms, teachers, anyone love our clothes. But, here in England, we love Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. I'd love to dress her."
