The Girl Next Door
Katie Holmes: My Family Inspires Me
by Valerie Nome
When Katie Holmes showed up to "The Extra Man" premiere held Monday in NYC, she was a vision of confidence yet approachable in every way. Wearing a red-and-navy striped Celine dress with a simple gold necklace and eye-catching diamond rings, Katie crinkled her nose often and even winked after saying thank you when she headed into the screening.
Something about her reminds me of a Raggedy Ann doll.
Perhaps thats because the actress, 31, who wed Tom Cruise in 2006, is mom to daughter Suri, 4, who has become a celebrated fashion icon in her own right.
Of her family, Katie said, Every day my husband inspires me. My family inspires me. My daughter inspires. Were always sort of creating new things whether its a party, or a script or a movie. We try to have a very creative household.
Will Suri follow in the footsteps of her famous folks?
I know that she can do whatever she wants and shell be great at it.
Katie doesnt take her family life for granted.
Whats the best thing about being a mom?
Everything. Im very lucky.
Indeed, watching Suri grow up is a spectacular experience, she confides.
Co-star Paul Dano gives Tom and Katie high marks after starring back-to-back with Tom in "Knight and Day" and Katie in this film.
Katies the sweetest woman, he says. Shes super kind and generous and we got along right away, luckily. Tom is one of the hardest-working dudes Ive ever met. To still be going that hard when youve done so much is admirable. Hes not a jaded dude. Hes a serious, hard worker.
Mom duty calls. Katie jetted out of NYC shortly after the screening began, and stars including Paul, Kevin Kline, Victorias Secret supermodel Doutzen Kroes and pregnant Rachel Dratch headed to Vapiano for the afterparty.
"The Extra Man" is in theaters July 30.
