The Holmes and Yang fall 2011 collection, as seen at Barneys on Madison Avenue.
No paparazzi was outside of Barneys Madison Avenue store this morning but the buzz was building. Ushered up to the sixth floor, where Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yangs line is sold, was a smattering of suede jackets, silk shirts and suiting. The inspiration of the line is real people mixed with Diane Keaton, says Holmes. For spring we started to do some prints and for fall were doing more color.
The 24 styles in the collection start at $325 for a camisole and end at $9,120 for a lace and leather gown. We wanted to make pieces that you could bend over and pick up your kid in and also look really elegant, says Yang. We know that women are on the go and do a lot of different sorts of things all in one day. Hopefully, this helps to provide them with some confidence in attacking all those different roles, says Holmes.
One of our biggest things is that were actually making suits, says Yang, and, the entire collection is made in New York. Holmes, wearing the mens trouser in cream noting, notes: We produce our suits in Brooklyn. We have a real sense of pride about making everything here. Yang then interjects excitedly like a proud parent about Holmes trousers: Look at the waistband on our pants to see that its handmade, to see that there is no glue in our lapels and theyre all hand-stitched.
Having just arrived after touring with the collection at the Chicago and Dallas outposts of Barneys, both women are finding certain pieces sell better than others. Holmes says that women want simple and sexy, while Yang adds that they crave sex appeal but not in an overt manner. In spite of their success, Holmes and Yang both admit they have their critics: Yangs twin girls and Holmes daughter. Their taste is not tainted, says Holmes with Yang adding, If its not pretty they dont like it. That, for me, is a very important thing.
The fall collection will be at Barneys New York stores starting in early July. For more information go to: holmesandyang.com.
